I don’t necessarily agree with the ethics that goes into salmon farming and the genetic modification of our food in general because of it’s environmental impacts, but unfortunately with the growing human population it’s becoming necessary to avoid starvation.
I agree that we need to focus on helping salmon be more successful as a species, rather than turn all of our attention to breeding. However, we’ve also started genetically engineering other foods because there isn’t enough to feed our growing population. I think if the domestic breeding of salmon hadn’t happened yet it would be inevitable anyway since it’s such a commonly eaten fish, despite that I don’t necessarily agree with it.
I agree that we should be looking to help species in their future success, but if domestic salmon were better managed to ensure they didn’t hinder the development of the wild species then I think that they could be an important resource to feed the growing human population. I think they would make a more reliable food supply because there are fewer factors to determine how many of them will survive a given year.
