Ranking the health globally of fish stocks is quite complicated. I initially thought for sure it would be a six, but my judgement was clouded by the results of the fishing season in my hometown, Sitka. The commercial fishermen were struggling this year to catch and sell the usual amount of fish that they rely on, I’m not sure why, but there was less fish this year than prior years. If fisheries around the world were facing the same problem than I would definitely stay with my rank as an 8, however I can’t be certain that this is the case. This is one strange phenomenon that I encountered this summer, and that was the problem that there were too many pink salmon coming back to spawn. My understanding is that hatcheries were raising too many pinks in the last few years causing an over-abundance this summer. This problem in addition to the commercial fishing problem makes me believe that a rank of six would work for the health of fish stocks.
