Due to both the fishing industry and climate change, our global fish stocks are in danger. Over the years, the amount of fish stocks being fished at sustainable levels has decreased dramatically. In 2015, 43 percent of market tuna stocks were fished unsustainably. This number has continued to increase. However, it is not all bad news. Many countries are working together to create new plans to manage the decline in fish stock health, the main issue being that rebuilding takes time and stricter regulations that are typically opposed by those profiting off of overfishing. As for climate change, the warming of the world’s oceans has a significant impact on wild fish populations. Some species have experienced as high as a 35 percent drop in sustainable yield. On the other hand, some species, like the black sea bass, have benefitted from the warming of the ocean and may help to fill in the gap between sustainable catching and consumption.
