In this part of Four Fish, Greenberg explains the good and bad things about Aqua Advantage salmon. They do grow at a faster rate but are still genetically engineered. Yes, Salmo domesticus fish are also genetically engineered, but, they were created through generations of selected breeding around desired characteristics. One of the main differences between Salmo domesticus and Aqua Advantage is that Salmo domesticus are not sexually pre-determined and sterilized. Although by the marketer’s point of view, Aqua Advantage is an easier and quicker way to make money. The fish would be an absolute game-changer because the fish would be strictly sterile females. This is one way that Aqua Advantage is better than Salmo domesticus because the farmed fish would not be able to reproduce with the wild salmon and alter that gene pool. Responding to the statement, “genetic engineering is the obvious next technological step in the history of human’s cultivating out food.”, I can’t 100% agree with that. Yes, it is an option, but that can’t be the only way to fix that problem we are faced with.
